Class Projects
The Senior Project
-
It's coming down to the wire. . .SENIOR PROJECTS ARE DUE Wednesday, February 24th!! That's just 4 weeks away, so get busy and get your project completed early!!
What exactly needs to be completed and turned in to my
Senior Project box
by the 24
th
of February? See below:
·
Your project must be
completely finished
and hours logged on the back of Form 5 with your mentor's signature!
·
The front side of Form 5 should be filled out by your mentor and signed by your mentor at the bottom--this does NOT need to be typed!
·
The back side of Form 5 should be filled in by you (typed please) and signed by your mentor at the bottom.
·
A completely filled out Form 6--this should be typed!
Also, please make sure you make 3 additional copies of Forms 5 & 6 before you turn them in to my box. Why 3 copies? You will need one for your portfolio (not due until April 30th) and one for each of your product evaluators.
What are the product evaluators? You will need to have your product evaluated by two different people--one will be a member of the senior project committee (I will assign this one) and one will be a teacher of your choice (each available teacher will only evaluate 5-7 products). You will pick your second evaluator with me, so
you must come see me
to do this-first come, first served!! If a teacher's slots are already filled, you will have to pick another teacher. I won't start signing up evaluators until AFTER February 24
th
, so DON'T ASK ME NOW!!
Also, you cannot sign up for a teacher UNLESS YOU HAVE ALL OF YOUR FORMS TURNED IN, so those of you who are missing forms get those turned in ASAP!
As always, if you have any questions, please e-mail me or stop by and see me in Room 224. I'm available 1st, 6th, & 7th hours, as well as before or after school.
Keep up the good work!

Help for the College Bound
From Student Services
Top 10 College Application Mistakes
Senior year is hectic, but don't let it affect the quality of your college applications. Make sure you take your time, pay attention to detail and plan ahead to meet the deadlines.
Following are some of the top responses from counselors and admissions staff who shared the most common mistakes on college applications.
-
Misspellings and grammatical errors - This is a big pet peeve of admissions people. If you misspell on something as important as the application, it shows that either you don't care or you aren't good at spelling. Some students even misspell their intended major. But don't stop with a spell check. Proofread for grammatical errors, too. (This is relevant to job applications, too.)
-
Applying online, but the application isn't submitted - If you apply online, you should receive confirmation that the college or university received it. Confirmation could be an email message, a Web page response or a credit card receipt. Follow through and make sure that your application has been received.
-
Forgotten Signatures - Make sure you sign and date the application form. Often students overlook that part of the form if it's on the back.
-
Not reading carefully - For example, if the form asks what "County" you live in, don't misread it as "Country" and write United States.
-
Listing extracurricular activities that aren't - Those that make the list include sports, the arts, formal organizations and volunteer work. Talking on the phone and hanging out with friends don't make the cut. Make sure your activity information is accurate. Colleges may check with your high school.
-
Not telling your school counselor where you've applied - Let your counselor know which colleges you're applying to, and ask him or her to review your high school transcript before sending it to colleges. Sometimes transcripts have errors.
-
Writing illegibly - First impressions count, so take your time and use your best handwriting. It will make a better impression. If possible, fill it out electronically and print it out.
-
Using an email address that friends might laugh about, but colleges won't - Select a professional email address. Keep your fun address for friends, but select an address using your name for college admissions.
-
Not checking your email regularly - If you've given an email address, the college will use it. You don't want to miss out on anything because you didn't read your email.
-
Letting Mom or Dad help you fill out your application - Admissions people know if your parents help, whether you have two different styles of handwriting or your admissions essay sounds more like a 45-year-old than a 17-year-old. It's fine to get advice, but do the work yourself.
ACT/PSAT/SAT Prep Resources/Materials/Opportunities
-
We are going to use our early release time on Wednesdays this year for two different opportunities for the students; Success for Life and Success for College. The Success for College time will be used for many different lessons, lectures, guest speakers, activities, etc, but also for ACT prep.
-
Diane Bonner has a fairly extensive ACT prep program through A+ (the online tutorial program she uses). Ms. Bonner said that the students do not have to be in a class to do it. She can register and enroll them and it can be done at home.
-
Residents of Kansas can go to the State Library of Kansas website,
http://www.kslib.info/
, and at the bottom of the page, there's a link to Homework Kansas. From here, there are many ACT and other test preparation resources, practice tests, etc.
(If it asks for a PIN/Birth Date, and won't let you go into the Homework Kansas website, just "Register for a Temporary Card" from the link on your screen. It will last for 30 days; sometime during that 30 days, you can go to BSHS or the City Library where the problem can be solved!)
-
BSHS students also can log on to
www.mystudentedge.com
(and enter Access Code: FXMXCGRT) for ACT/SAT/PSAT test prep, admissions advice, scholarship search, financial aid information and much more! Please see more information on the back of this letter.
-
Beyond the school, on the ACT registration form, there are optional ACT Test Prep materials you can order: One is called "Real ACT Prep Guide" for $25.00 and one is called "ACT Online Prep" for $19.95. I can send a registration packet home or you can order it online at
www.actstudent.org
, which is probably the easiest.

Attendance Accountability
Four Layers
When attempting to improve attendance data quality,
consider the four layers of attendance accountability:
1) The Teacher
- When a student is absent, their teachers are
the first to notice. Accountability in attendance reporting begins
with teachers who closely monitor and correctly record absences,
late arrivals, and early departures.
2) The Student
- Students should be aware that teachers
monitor and record their attendance, and that absences have
consequences. When they are aware that attendance is closely
tracked, they realize that they are accountable for being in class
each day.
3) The Parents/Guardians
- Unfortunately, a small percentage
of families are not as diligent as most when it comes to making sure
their children attend school each day. With regular and consistent
notifications, parents learn that the school pays attention to absences.
With this knowledge, they become accountable for ensuring that their
children attend school as expected.
4) The District
- Through the policies of their local Board of Education or other
governing body, school districts play a key role in attendance accountability. By clearly
defining acceptable attendance standards, as well as outlining potential consequences
of poor attendance, districts become accountable to the community by communicating their
attendance expectations.
With the four layers of accountability as guidelines, districts can increase student attendance.
