Inclement Weather Policy

Our district is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for students. However, given Kansas's weather, there will be times when school is held despite extremely cold temperatures or snow-covered roads.

Before deciding on school closures or delays, district employees test drive areas in Bonner Springs, Edwardsville, and the Delaware Ridge community. These cities consistently maintain their roads well, allowing our district to remain open when others might close.

When a school closure decision is necessary, the district will announce it as early as possible. Notifications will be sent via Skylert, our parent communication portal. To ensure you receive these notifications, please log into your Skyward account and update your email address and phone number under the 'Skylert' section. Announcements will also be posted on the district's Facebook page.

Additionally, check the following local TV stations for updates:

  • WDAF Channel 4

  • KCTV Channel 5

  • KMBC Channel 9

  • KSHB Channel 41

Typically, the decision will be to either close school for the day or proceed with the session. However, in cases of extreme cold or other weather-related issues, the district may opt for a two-hour delayed start. This approach can sometimes be more practical than canceling school entirely. Below is the schedule reflecting procedures for a delayed start.

YMCA of Greater Kansas City Inclement Weather Procedure
In the event USD 204 closes due to inclement weather, the YMCA will not operate programs in district facilities (this includes before and after school Y Care). During circumstances when a late start has been called, Y Care will not operate during morning programs. As a result of a late start day, Y Care will operate as normal only in the afternoon.
